Abstract:
The use of enhanced oil recovery in existing fields has proven a valuable tool to extend life and improve the economics of know reserves. From the initial concept, pilot study, utilization of chemistry, and mature asset management, efficiency questions need to be answered and the flow paths understood. Using case studies, including those from Wyoming, Tracerco will provide data on how chemical tracers can be utilized to quickly help answer the questions for remaining oil, CO2 injection, polymers applications, and water floods. All to be able to adjust and increase production quickly.

Bio: Richard A. Bonander is the president of Inter-Mountain Pipe and Threading Company (will be 40 years in business this coming April) , Bonander Properties and Bonander Ranches. Richard has a degree in Construction Engineering from Montana State University and grew up in Bozeman, Montana. After graduation in 1977 he moved to Casper and been there ever since. Richard is married to Jolene and they have two kids Dana and Heather. Richard is an avid hunter and has hunted all over the world. He has been to Africa 25 times.

Talk: Advancing Core Analysis Forward Towards an Integrated Rock and Fluid Laboratory WorkFlow; Focused on Dual Retort Application and Results
Abstract : As the oil and gas industry continues to transition from primary exploration-focused efforts towards development and enhanced oil recovery opportunities, the applicability of legacy core analytical measurements becomes taxed with the value of information generated and its relevance to forward-looking operations. With that understanding, we focused efforts towards advancing the rock and fluid characterization through a combined laboratory workflow where nuclear magnetic resonance, geochemistry on rock and fluids, bulk and grain densities as well as a dual retort design propel quantification capability forward, helping to maintain the relevancy of supporting subsurface characterization in the new decade. The step-by-step measurements performed on a single sample result in the ability to quantify total storage (porosity) from three different independent approaches thereby reducing uncertainty and providing increased accuracy in the total storage for data scientists, engineers, geologists, and petrophysicists to model and use to predict differentiating factors in performance behavior. Quantification also applies into the Midstream application where injection capacity often needs to be constrained. Complimenting the above laboratory focus is a unique approach to fluid saturation quantification where both the hydrocarbon and the water phase liberated from the storage volume are measured. The design of the workflow is intended to differentiate the partitioning ability of mobile versus immobile (free versus bound) water as well as hydrocarbon fraction. Differentiating these fractions provides a revised approach to understanding the hydrocarbon in place versus potential recoverable volumes based on what is ‘more’ mobile in the rocks investigated. To flip that around, the increase in accuracy in total water saturation is critical to better understand and hopefully predict water cut, expected water-oil ratios, or if seeking water for flooding or other alternative energy purposes, our closed retort fluid collection efficiency sets the fluid quantification apart from other legacy approaches. We briefly share examples of a case study where the generated laboratory data is then linked to wireline-based characterization to demonstrate how the data can impact subsurface understanding and therefore business decisions.

Bio: I, Dennis Brabec am not a biologist and How I was roped into this venture is a good question. I am a Registered Petroleum Engineer; raised in the northern Big Horn Basin. Attended Northwest College and received my B. S. in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Wyoming in 1970. I have worked with several companies (ARCO, US Army, Cenex, Mapco, Kerr-McGee, EOG, Nerd, Elk and Warren) primarily in the western US in Drilling, Production and Operations Management. I also run a farming and ranching operation and now I also own/manage a "chicken ranch".

How Geology Helped Solve 75-year old WWII Mysteries of Central Wyoming

Preserving the history of Casper Army Air Field (CAAF), 1942-1945
CAAF trained 18,000 B-17 and B-24 bomber combat aircrewmen during 1942-1945. There were 90 training crashes and 136 fatalities. The Friends’ mission is to assist the Wyoming Veterans Memorial Museum in locating and documenting lost CAAF crash sites, and memorializing the lost aircrews.
Lost crash sites found and documented by the Friends include: Murchison crew (B-24J, January 1, 1945, 6 men), Zorn crew (B-24J, June 17, 1944, 8 men), and Machala crew (B-17F, February 23,1943, 10 men). Current landowners have no idea that horrific and tragic crashes occurred on their land. Due to confusing and inaccurate reported locations, geology and geomorphology were applied to help find the sites.
In 2020, Friends researchers discovered the Murchison B-24J south of Casper after being lost for 75 years. In 2021, the Friends invited 19 living relatives of the crew to Casper for a memorial service on the site. The Wyoming Army National Guard conducted a full military funeral service for the six crewmen.
In 2021, Friends discovered the Machala B-17F site after being lost for over 60 years. The site is NW of Douglas, Wyoming, and many miles from locations in newspaper and AAF reports and previous searches. Friends are currently researching living relatives of the Machala crew. A memorial service is planned for July 2022.
In 2021, Friends discovered the Zorn B-24J site on Casper Mountain. Although the crash site was widely known by local residents many years ago, modern landowners typically have no knowledge about it. Due to development, little or no evidence of the crash site remains today. With assistance from Casper College, the Friends are researching living relatives of the Zorn crew. A memorial service is planned for 2023.
Casper residents responded with funds for a granite memorial marker at the Murchison site. We are currently accepting support for similar monuments for the Machala and Zorn crews.
Mark Milliken Bio:
Mark is a consulting Petroleum Geologist and owner of Triangle G Consulting, LLC in Casper. Professional experience includes several oil and gas production and consulting engineering companies in the Rocky Mountain region and the western United States.
He has been associated with the Wyoming Veterans Memorial Museum since 2000, and is currently on the Museum’s Board of Directors. Being a veteran himself, Mark visits veterans under hospice care.
